The new single-point urban interchange at Interstate 55 and Mississippi Route 463 near Madison owes its small footprint to its tightly curved girders. The girders and other aesthetic, safety and technical advancements are credited to prime engineering designer Michael Baker, Jr., Inc., and to detailing by Tensor Engineering Co.

Credit for these technical feats also go to the partnership between the National Steel Bridge Alliance and the Federal Highway Administration and American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials. David Ratterman of Stites & Harbison is general counsel to the American Institute of Steel Construction, Inc. and the National Steel Bridge Alliance (a division of AISC).
